The US Justice Department has entered the fray in a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to halt the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in federal court, targets the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and undermines the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the most significant response by Democrats in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will shape the final years of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, congressional probes and potential further challenges.
